Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:35

The Angels were sent to destroy the People of the Prophet Lut

Allah the Exalted said about Ibrahim, peace be upon him,

(Then when the fear had gone away from (Ibrahim), and the glad tidings had reached him, he began to plead with Us for the people of Lut. Verily, Ibrahim was, without doubt forbearing, used to invoke Allah with humility, and was repentant. "O Ibrahim! Forsake this. Indeed, the commandment of your Lord has gone forth. Verily, there will come a torment for them which cannot be turned back.")(11:74-76) Allah said here,

((Ibrahim) said: "Then for what purpose you have come, O messengers") meaning, `what is the mission that you were sent with,'

(They said: "We have been sent to a people who are criminals.") in reference to the people of Lut,

(To send down upon them stones of baked clay, marked), or written,

(by your Lord for transgressors.) recorded with Allah to their names; each stone has the name of its companion. Allah said in Surat Al-`Ankabut,

((Ibrahim) said: "But there is Lut in it." They said: "We know better who is there. We will verily save him and his family except his wife: she will be of those who remain behind.")(29:32), and said here,

(So We brought out from therein the believers.) they are: Lut and his family, except his wife,

(But We found not there any household of the Muslims except one.) Allah the Exalted said,

(And We have left there a sign for those who fear the painful torment.) meaning, `We left a proof of the punishment, torment and stones made of Sijjil (baked clay) that We sent on them; We made their dwelling place a putrid, evil, dead sea. This should provide a lesson for the believers,'

(for those who fear the painful torment.)

Pada ayat ini Allah menerangkan, bahwa setelah para malaikat pergi kepada kaum Lut untuk menurunkan azab, timbullah tanya jawab di antara mereka tentang caranya menghancurkan orang-orang durhaka, maka Allah memerintahkan agar mereka lebih dahulu mengeluarkan orang-orang yang beriman dari kampung halaman mereka, supaya terhindar dari azab. Para malaikat itu hanya menjumpai sebuah rumah saja yaitu rumah Nabi Lut dengan penghuninya yang muslim sekitar tiga belas orang saja. Mereka yang selamat pada ayat ini disebut sebagai orang Islam yang berserah diri dan tekun melaksanakan perintah Allah dan menjauhi larangan-Nya. Pada kedua ayat ini diterangkan bahwa di antara kaum Lut hidup orang-orang Mukminin dan Muslimin. Menurut Muhammad Ali asshabuni, mereka disebut Mukminin (ayat 35) karena mereka mengimani dengan hati, dan mereka disebut sebagai Muslimin (ayat 36) karena mereka mengamalkan ajaran-ajaran Allah dengan anggota tubuh mereka dengan ketaatan. Hal ini sejalan dengan hadis al-Bukhari dan Muslim yaitu ketika Rasulullah saw ditanya tentang Islam dan Iman: Apakah Islam? beliau menjawab, "Engkau bersaksi bahwa tiada Tuhan selain Allah dan bahwa Muhammad adalah utusan Allah, mendirikan salat (yang lima waktu), mengeluarkan zakat, berpuasa di bulan Ramadan dan naik haji ke Baitullah. Dan apakah iman itu? beliau menjawab, Engkau Beriman kepada Allah, para malaikat, kitab-kitab Nya, para utusan-Nya, hari akhir dan kepada takdir yang baik dan yang buruk dari Allah. (Riwayat al-Bukhari dan Muslim) Perlu dijelaskan di sini apabila kata Islam disebut secara sendiri, maka berarti tercakup pengertian iman. Demikian pula dengan kata iman bila disebut sendiri berarti tercakup kata Islam. Tetapi kalau keduanya disebutkan bersamaan, maka keduanya berbeda satu sama lain, masing-masing memiliki artinya sendiri-sendiri, iman berbeda dari Islam. (
