Surah Al-A'raf 7:100

Ibn `Abbas commented on Allah's statement,

(Is it not a guidance for those who inherit the earth from its previous inhabitants. ..) "(Allah says,) did We not make clear to them that had We willed, We would have punished them because of their sins" Mujahid and several others said similarly. Abu Ja`far bin Jarir At-Tabari explained this Ayah, "Allah says, `Did We not make clear to those who succeeded on the earth after destroying the previous nations who used to dwell in that land. Then they followed their own ways, and behaved as they did and were unruly with their Lord. Did We not make clear to them that,

(that had We willed, We would have punished them for their sins.) by bringing them the same end that was decreed for those before them,

(And We seal up their hearts), We place a cover over their heart,

(so that they hear not), words of advice or reminding"' I say that similarly, Allah said,

(Is it not a guidance for them: how many generations We have destroyed before them, in whose dwellings they walk Verily, in this are signs indeed for men of understanding.) 20:128

(Is it not a guidance for them: how many generations We have destroyed before them in whose dwellings they do walk about Verily, therein indeed are signs. Would they not then listen) 32:26 and,

(Had you not sworn aforetime that you would not leave (the world for the Hereafter). And you dwelt in the dwellings of men who wronged themselves)14:44-45 Also, Allah said,

(And how many a generation before them have We destroyed! Can you find a single one of them or hear even a whisper of them) 19:98 meaning, do you see any of them or hear their voices There are many other Ayat that testify that Allah's torment strikes His enemies, while His bounty reaches His faithful believers. Thereafter comes Allah's statement, and He is the Most Truthful, the Lord of all that exists,

Dalam ayat ini ditegaskan bahwa umat yang mewarisi suatu negeri setelah lenyapnya penduduk negeri itu karena ditimpa siksaan Allah akibat keingkaran mereka kepada-Nya, memahami dan meyakini bahwa Allah kuasa untuk menimpakan azab tersebut kepada mereka karena dosa-dosa mereka apabila dikehendaki-Nya. Juga Allah kuasa untuk mengunci mati hati nurani mereka, sehingga mereka tak dapat lagi menerima pelajaran dan nasihat agama dan tidak mau beriman.

Sebagaimana telah disebutkan pada bagian terdahulu, Allah telah mengutus beberapa orang rasul kepada umat mereka sebelum diutusnya Nabi Syuaib kepada umatnya. Umat-umat terdahulu telah ditimpa azab Allah karena dosa-dosa dan keingkaran mereka kepada Allah. Azab yang menimpa mereka adalah sedemikian hebatnya, memusnahkan mereka sedemikian rupa, sehingga mereka seolah-olah tidak pernah hidup di muka bumi ini. Setelah mereka itu lenyap, Allah mendatangkan umat yang baru untuk menghuni negeri tersebut. Umat yang baru ini mengetahui sejarah umat terdahulu itu, karena buku-buku dan kitab-kitab suci mereka menyebutkan hal itu. Mereka mengetahui apa yang dialami umat tersebut, yaitu azab yang dahsyat. Dan mereka tahu hal-hal yang menyebabkan didatangkannya azab tersebut kepada mereka, yaitu lantaran dosa-dosa dari keingkaran mereka kepada Allah dan Rasul-Nya.

Seharusnya mereka dapat mengambil pelajaran dari peristiwa sejarah, dapat memahami bahwa Allah kuasa untuk menimpakan azab yang serupa itu kepada diri mereka bila mereka berbuat dosa dan kemaksiatan seperti umat yang terdahulu itu.

Ayat tersebut tidak hanya merupakan peringatan bagi orang-orang kafir, melainkan juga bagi orang-orang muslim. Setelah mengetahui sebab-sebab ditimpakan azab kepada umat para Rasul yang terdahulu dan setelah mengetahui sunnatullah mengenai umat-umat yang berdosa, maka seharusnya kita menjauhkan diri dari kesalahan-kesalahan serupa itu, agar kita tidak ditimpa azab Allah yang akan menyebabkan kita kehilangan segala-galanya.
